The International Educators Institute is a unique week-long professional development program and Pacific Northwest field study tour. Since 1996, IEI participants have traveled to Portland from 20 countries and 26 states. We bring together international forest researchers and the most active and successful master educators in the U.S. and abroad.

In my country we say HEJ which means Hello. The word for forest is SKOV.

Hey, Ya'll!! I am Sheryl Crain from Franklinton, Louisiana, USA. I am so excited to be here. We have many greetings in Louisiana. "Hey, Ya'll!" is very common. It is also common to say to someone you know, "How's ya momma and 'em?" That's asking about someone's mother and the rest of the family. We call the forest the "woods" or the "boondocks". We also have a lot of swamp in LA, so sometimes it's that. I am so looking forward to the rest of this week!
Hi, This is Jim Chandler, from Maine in the US. I am consultant teacher in Science for the Auburn School Department in Auburn Maine. I plan curriculum, do professional development, and run the Auburn Land Lab ( http://landlab.auburnschl.edu where we have students come for field trips on a wide range of science and environmental education topics. A common greeting is "Good weather we are havin'!" Some of the terms we have for forest is the "Northern Wood" and my favorite kind of woods is the "deep dark woods".
What a wonderful place to study forests. I am really excited to explore all the resources here and in our collective wisdom. We all have so much in common... and so much to learn and share with each other. What fun we will have talking, exploring, and discussing!

Howdy and yeehaw from Wyoming - come in 'n sit down! Hazel here, and when we go into the forest in central Wyoming, we say we are going to the mountain (if we want taller trees) or to the lake (if we want shrubs.)
What a fantastic group of people! I am looking forward to working with folks from so many places. My students will never believe that I ate dinner with someone from Palestine, laughed with someone from China, rode with a fella from Australia who stayed on the correct side of the road, learned how to say HEJ, learned that someone actually LIVES in the armpit of Florida, and met up with someone who knows about Cajun French all in one day!

This is Susan from Corvallis, Oregon. I have spent more of my life in Austin, Texas than in Oregon, and although we joke with our Oregon friends and say "howdy," the normal greeting I grew up with is "Hey, guys!" It is used for both guys and gals (boys and girls).
The word for forest we used in Texas was "the woods." In Oregon, especially at the College of Forestry at Oregon State University where I am a Ph.D. student and International Programs assistant, it is more common and scientifically accepted to say "forest," but I still invite people to go for a walk in the woods.

Wassup, ya'll? This is Gail Lutowski from Georgia. In south Georgia, the forest is known as the "forest" or the "woods." Tricky, eh? ; ) Our forests are predominantly pine on the uplands- lots of loblolly, slash and longleaf stands- and a wide variety of hardwoods in the river bottoms and swamps.
My first impression of the IEI is that it is going to be an AWESOME week. Everyone seems so nice and we couldn't have found a better place than the Pacific Northwest to come together.
What do people come to North Texas, where I live, to see or visit? Most people come to Dallas to see the Grassy Knoll where Pres. John F Kennedy was killed. In South Texas, Big Bend National Park has lots of tourisit come from all the world. East Texas has National Forest and some state forest that are popular vacation spots. In the Houston area, NASA is a large attraction. Pala Duro Canyon State Park is a beautiful place to visit in West Texas.
